The Regent is the third shoe, not the first.

Two buckles instead of laces. It does the same work as a derby and looks nothing like one — which is the point, and also the reason it belongs in a wardrobe that already has the basics covered. Buy the Oxford first, then the derby. Then this.

Set the buckles once to your foot and the shoe goes on and off without touching them again. The straps hold across the instep more evenly than laces do, and the clean line across the vamp reads sharp under a trouser break rather than fussy. Black for the office, brown for the days that allow it.

Everything begins with the material. We work in leather and suede, selected for how they behave over time rather than how they photograph on day one — leathers with enough body to hold a shape, suedes with a close, even nap that stays soft where the foot flexes.

The construction follows: a last shaped for a real working week, a lining that breaks in with your foot, and a sole with the grip a wet British pavement asks for.

Look after them and they'll look after you. Leather wants a polish every few weeks, suede a soft brush and a protector. Both want shoe trees between wears.
