#4 — Their own businesses: hotels vs. the CR7 empire
Both understood that the name is worth more than the salary. Messi built MiM Hotels, a chain of 4- and 5-star hotels across Spain, launched the Mas+ sports drink, owns the 525 Rosario production company, and holds stakes in commercial real estate. Ronaldo has the CR7 empire — hotels, perfumes, clothing — valued between $100 and $150 million, plus a 15% stake in Al-Nassr itself.
The subtle difference: Ronaldo became a club owner. Messi only has the option to buy part of Inter Miami after he retires.
Three categories to go. And #1 is where the gap becomes a chasm.

#3 — Annual sponsorships: two lifetime deals
The sneaker war is settled right here. Messi earns about $70 million a year off the field, with Adidas (his lifetime partner, ~$25M/year), Apple, PepsiCo, Mastercard, Budweiser, Hard Rock, and Gatorade. Ronaldo runs in the same annual range, with Nike, Herbalife, and Tag Heuer.
In annual sponsorship flow, it's nearly a dead heat. But Ronaldo holds one card Messi can't match — and it comes now.
#2 — Audience: the biggest on the planet has an owner
Sponsorship is worth the size of the audience. And here Ronaldo opens a real lead. Ronaldo is the most-followed person in the world, with more than 670 million followers on Instagram alone, plus a YouTube channel that shattered subscription records. Messi also has a massive audience, one of the biggest in sports — but not the biggest on the planet.
That reach gap is what makes a brand pay a little more for Ronaldo. It's pure distribution, and it converts into millions.
And now #1 — the category that single-handedly decides who's richer.
